In conjunctions with reissue specialist Collectables, Sun Records reissued a pair of original Johnny Cash Sun collections on a single CD. Backed by his famed Tennessee Two, Cash made country and rockabilly history on Sun in the '50s. With his lean, angular sound and hearty baritone voice full of passion and commitment, he forged one of the most unique styles in all of country music.
Despite its cover and title, SHOWTIME is not a live album, but a batch of Cash's classic studio sides. Some of his finest tunes are here; the sad, wistful "I Guess Things Happen That Way" rubs shoulders with the venomous "Cry, Cry, Cry" and the rollicking "Hey Porter." GOLDEN HITS VOL. 3 continues in the same vein. There aren't many artists capable of supporting three greatest hits volumes, especially just from one short segment of their careers, but one listen to the mournful "Oh Lonesome Me" and the randy "Straight A's in Love" leaves little doubt as to the album title's accuracy.
