Personnel: Art Porter (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Eddie Peterson (tenor saxophone); Steve Smyth , Arthur Hoyle (trumpet); Erich Hochberg (bass instrument); Paul Wertico (drums).
Jazz pianist Don Bennett epitomizes the phrase "musician's musician." Something of a legend in the jazz scene of his hometown Chicago, Bennett also contributed to the West Coast scene in the early 1960s. Originally recorded in 1990 (and first issued on the Southport label), CHICAGO CALLING features the cream of Windy City jazz talent. It's a dynamic, modern bebop session with commanding solo work from saxophonists Art Porter (an established player in smooth jazz) and Ed Peterson, plus sturdy support from drummer Paul Wertico (formerly with Pat Metheny). Anyone who considers the bracing, mainstream sound of 1960s Prestige and Blue Note sessions essential listening will find much of the same on CHICAGO CALLING.
