"[An] absorbing documentary....These talented women cumulatively form a satisfying snapshot of the distaff art world that's unfussily captured by Clemente's clearly admiring camera."
Artists have long flocked to New York City to find themselves, and this documentary profiles their relationships to the metropolis. Feminist pioneer Nancy Spero, performance artist Marina Abramovic, sculptor Kiki Smith, painter Ghada Amer, and street artist Swoon are the five talented women who tell their stories. Cutting between the artists in their studios and at exhibitions, OUR CITY DREAMS is an engaging look at the artistic process and the role cities play in it.
In this “lyrical documentary about the intersection of location and imagination” (The New York Times), filmmaker Chiara Clemente shines a light on five women artists whose inspiration is fueled by living in the “cauldron of creativity” – New York City. The artists – Nancy Spero, Marina Abramovic, Kiki Smith, Ghada Amer and Swoon – are at different stages of life and have widely varying cultural backgrounds; each has a distinctive passion, character, motivation and artistic style. But they all have one thing in common: the city to which they have journeyed and now call home.
