The big-band pianist (and sometime trumpeter) Joe Bushkin performs a variety of instrumental and vocal pieces both solo and with a small group on this vintage series of recordings. Highlights include the delightful "Serenade in Thirds," which recalls the playfulness of Fats Waller; the loose, after-hours blues of "Caldonia Is Gone"; a swinging "Sweet Georgia Brown," which features the legendary trumpeter Oran "Hot Lips" Page; and the energetic saxophone of a young Zoot Sims on the bebop-inspired "Pickin' at the Pic."
