Product Description:

I CAN NO LONGER HEAR THE GUITAR: Philippe Garrel (REGULAR LOVERS) directs this autobiographical exploration of love and loss. Focusing on a couple's disintegrating relationship, the film follows a fractured timeline as it jumps from bitter breakups to drug-fueled reconciliations. J'ENTENDS PLUS LA GUITARE is dedicated to Nico of The Velvet Underground, with whom Garrel was involved romantically.

EMERGENCY KISSES: Garrel turns cinema into a family affair with this drama that features himself, his actor father, Maurice Garrel, his then-wife, Brigitte Sy, and his young son, Louis Garrel (making his screen debut). In LES BAISERS DE SECOURS, a film director creates familial strife when he won't cast his actress wife in a role that she inspired.

Product Description:

In 2005, after his films were long unavailable in the U.S., French auteur Philippe Garrel drew widespread critical acclaim with his first stateside release Regular Lovers (starring one of France's hottest young actors, his son Louis Garrel of The Dreamers). Now, Zeitgeist is proud to present two of his most important works together on DVD for the first time-I Can No Longer Hear the Guitar and Emergency Kisses. Crafted in a poetic, meditative style, these two films are marvelous examples of Garrel's eloquent, incisive studies of love, and are an essential acquisition for the cinephile.
I Can No Longer Hear the Guitar (J'entends plus la guitare, 1991) is Garrel's haunting tribute to his ten-year relationship with the iconic German chanteuse Nico. Johannater Steege (The Vanishing) plays Marianne, the doomed lover of Gérard (Benoît Régent, Three Colors: Blue). Caught in a self-destructive heroin haze, they drift together and apart as Gérard struggles with his simultaneous desire for and repulsion towards a stable life.
In the tender and heartbreaking Emergency Kisses (Les Baisers de secours, 1989), the entire Garrel clan steps in front of the camera as versions of themselves- Philippe, father Maurice, then-wife Brigitte Sy, and five-year-old Louis (The Dreamers, Love Songs) in his first screen role. When a philandering film director refuses to cast his stage actress wife in a role largely based on her, the couple begins to wrestle with their conflicting philosophies on art and life.
