Rugged coal miner Pete Ramsey falls in love with night club singer Victory Kane, and their passionate romance leads to marriage. Pete's hard work and dedication to the Linden Mining Company pay off and he rises to superintendent, an enormous rise in social circumstance. But insatiable Victory begins a torrid secret love affair with playboy mine owner Gary Linden. Slaving long hours and risking his life to acquire wealth for his wife, Pete refuses to believe rumors of her infidelity. Only an unimaginable catastrophe will bring justice to the adulterers.

Leading man Chester Morris starred in seven other Pine-Thomas productions, often depicting manly men defying death in risky occupations. Morris was praised for his role in The Big House (1930), starred as Boston Blackie in 14 films (1941-1949) and went on to a busy television career that continued up until his passing in 1970. Tornado also features character actors Vince Barnett, Lane Chandler and Regis Toomey in uncredited roles as miners.
