Los Angeles Times - 01/16/2009
"This Indian/Chinese cinematic hybrid is likable and entertaining....CHANDNI is a comic action adventure starring Indian action star Akshay Kumar, whose physical humor brings to mind Jim Carrey."
New York Times - 01/16/2009
"Genre mixing is mother's milk to Hindi films, so it's no surprise that CHADNI CHOWK TO CHINA can so seamlessly add kung fu to the usual blend of comedy, dance and melodrama."
Variety - 01/15/2009
"[E]verything is fast and furious....Some of the sequences, and d.p. Himman Dhamija's imagery are quite beautiful and, in the case of the dance numbers featuring Padukone, stunning."
East meets the Far East in CHANDI CHOWK TO CHINA, a Bollywood extravaganza that blends singing and dancing with martial arts. Full of comedy and drama, CHANDI CHOWK TO CHINA is about a mustachioed buffoon named Sidhu (Bollywood action star Akshay Kumar), who worships a potato and always looks for the easy way out. After being mistaken as the reincarnation of a great Chinese warrior, Sidhu and his friend Chopstick leave India for China to defeat the evil Hojo (martial arts legend and KILL BILL star Gordon Liu), where Sidhu quickly learns that he's in over his head. But armed with a sense of destiny and aided by an amnesiac cop, Chiang (Chuck Norris protégé Roger Yuan), and his daughter, Sakhi (model Deepika Padukone), Sidhu transforms himself from a humble cook into a kung fu master.
Truly an international film in every sense of the word, CHANDI CHOWK TO CHINA blends the best of Bollywood and its lavishness with masterly martial arts. With stunts choreographed by the legendary Huen Chiu-Ku (whose credits include KILL BILL and CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON), the action is non-stop and a feast for the eyes. Kumar's performance as Sidhu is both comical and compelling, and leading lady Padukone sets new standards for hotness in her dual role as Sakhi and bad girl Meow Meow. A welcome import from India, CHANDI CHOWK TO CHINA is jam-packed with enough action and comedy that it is sure to find a home with audiences around the world.
