Joaquin's second collection of Billy Jack Wills' music, like the first, reflects his R&B roots, particularly in jump blues and the early jazz of Louis Armstrong. The liner notes portray his band as a "missing link" between Western swing and rock & roll, and that's a good judgment: Wills' vocals were deeply influenced by R&B shouters like Wynonie Harris, making him among the first country artists to overtly combine the two genres. "For You, My Love" and "Milk Cow Blues" are two of his greatest pre-rock & roll fusions. "Stardust" is terrific, generating fantastic solos from Dick McComb and Tiny Moore. The sound quality flits, but the songs are strong and Vance Terry's steel guitar is crisp and perfect. Excellent stuff. ~ Jim Smith
