Description by OLDIES.com:

Pretty British cabaret singer Sadie Merivale is swept off her feet and marries noble Chinese banker Yuan Sing. The couple take up residence in the Chinese Bungalow - a gorgeous Mandarin retreat deep in the Malayan rain forest where Yuan Sing has gathered rare and beautiful treasures. But the enchanted castle turns into a solitary prison when Sadie begins to feel neglected and alone due to her husband's frequent and prolonged business trips abroad. Harold Marquess, the owner of a nearby plantation, finds the lovely young bride unattended and a torrid love affair blooms. When Yuan Sing discovers his wife's infidelity, he creates a sinister plan for revenge. The ancient code of the Chinese demands that a slow, painful death will be inflicted upon Sadie's lover.

This rare and compelling film was stylishly produced and directed by George King whose work includes The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (1936), The Face At The Window (1939), and numerous other Tod Slaughter horror productions. Academy Award winner Paul Lukas (Watch On The Rhine, 1943), appeared in The Lady Vanishes (1938) and The Casino Murder Case (1935), but is probably best remembered as Professor Aronnax in 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954).

Product Description:

In this melodrama based on a play by Matheson Lang, a Chinese aristocrat plots to get rid of his British wife's lover. Robert Douglas, Kay Walsh, and Oscar winner Paul Lukas (WATCH ON THE RHINE) star in this well-executed 1940 version directed by George King.

Rating 4.0 Worth watching Movie Lover: from MIDDLE VILLAGE, NY US -- December, 14, 2010

Paul Lukas plays a pretty convincing Oriental/Malay millionaire (with a Hungarian accent)in this eerie and dark film about terror, tradition, and infedility. It's a bit wordy at times but it builds to a nice conclusion.

Rating 3.5 Indeed a Forgotten Horror Classic Movie Lover: from Walnut Creek, CA US -- February, 27, 2010

Reasonably compelling chiller. Paul Lukas is terrifying and menacing in his unflagging politeness.
