With the exception of "Release Me," a superb remake of the Esther Phillips/Englebert Humperdinck hit done for the tiny Watch label, this collects Adams work for the Nashville-based SSS label in the late '60s. Despite the fact that he was recording with players theoretically more comfortable with country music, this is peak Adams and as good as Southern soul gets. High points include a terrific remake of his first hit, "I Won't Cry," with his trademark falsetto soaring higher than ever; the title song, which neatly splits the difference between soul and country; the gospel-inflected "Real Live Hurtin' Man"; and the ominously bluesy "I Can't Be All Bad," on which an uncredited guitarist contributes some slide guitar worthy of Duane Allman's collaborations with Wilson Pickett). Amazing stuff.

This is a "must have" CD. This entire CD is truly a golden classic with a bluesy/country mix. The sweet melodic falsetto of Johnny Adams on his renditions of "I Won't Cry", "Reconsider Me", and "You Can Depend On Me" is so incredibly beautiful that you will want to listen to this CD over and over again. I purchased this CD about a year ago and I just really listened to it after I heard "I Won't Cry" on a local oldies radio station last Saturday. I knew that voice was unmistakably Johnny Adams. I rushed to my CD collection to see if that song was on the CD and thank goodness it was. I haven't put the CD back in the collection yet. I carry it to my car whenever I leave home. Give it a listen, I'm sure you will love it too.
