After working as a guitarist in the late '50s and early '50s for such artists as Muddy Waters, Magic Sam, and Junior Wells, Syl Johnson began recording on his own. His first successful releases were on the Twinight label, his breakthrough hit coming in 1967 with "Come On Sock it to Me," which opens this collection. Johnson went on to record his first two albums for the label (DRESSES TOO SHORT and IS IT BECAUSE I'M BLACK?), along with a fantastic string of singles, before moving on to the Hi Records label.
TWILIGHT & TWINIGHT is a set of great overlooked soul gems. Johnson's voice is impassioned, and the guitar playing, coupled with some ferocious horns and relentless rhythm sections, is riveting, as evidenced by cuts like "Sorry Bout Dat." Johnson continued to record for the rest of the century, releasing some powerful work. TWILIGHT & TWINIGHT offers up the first significant highlights of his long career.
