"Joined by such stellar players as Stuart Duncan, Jerry Douglas, and Viktor Krauss, Barenberg coaxes melodic beauty from his six-stringed instrument."
Personnel: Russ Barenberg (baritone guitar); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Ruthie Dornfeld, Stuart Duncan (fiddle); Jeremiah McLane (accordion); Vicktor Krauss, Dennis Crouch (bass guitar); Kenny Malone (cymbals).
The bluegrass genre overflows with musicians who are long on chops but short on tunes. Guitarist Russ Barenberg is not one of these, and his 2007 release WHEN AT LAST (his first solo release since 1988), makes an outstanding case for that claim. That's not to say Barenberg doesn't display excellent technique (he does), but rather that the emphasis on WHEN AT LAST is on songs and arrangements, with "Little Monk" and the title track among the highlights. Dobro player Jerry Douglas, fiddler Stuart Duncan, and bassist Viktor Krauss lend A-list support for this superb collection of originals.
