Nan Barlow, a student of the occult, is encouraged by her history professor, Driscoll, to visit the decaying village of Whitewood, Massachusetts. Mrs. Newless, proprietress of the Ravens Inn, is in reality Elizabeth Selwyn, a witch who was burned at the stake in 1692 but restored to life through a pact with the Devil. When Nan discovers the witch and her cove, including Professor Driscoll, performing human sacrifices on Candlemas Eve, she is killed as a sacrifice.
