Twenty-eight years and 18 albums after Steeleye Span's debut, 1998's HORKSTOW GRANGE has the feeling of both a fresh start and a return to form. This is the first Steeleye Span album not to feature Maddy Prior's angelic, bell-like vocals. However, her full-time replacement, Gay Woods, was no novice; she had been a member of the band for their first album, 1970's HARK! THE VILLAGE WAIT.
The album's title track also echoes the group's beginnings, for "Horkstow Grange" is the obscure English ballad which features the character named Steeleye Span. This song, like the 11 other mostly traditional folk tunes here, is performed with the casual grace of old friends having a singalong. Woods' lovely voice and Peter Knight's superlative fiddling are at the center of these performances, but never overshadow the other members' contributions. HORKSTOW GRANGE is an intimate, warm, and inviting record.
