Product Description:

King Curtis and his bubbling, stutter-style tenor sax playing brought a touch of jazz and a whole ton of R&B to countless rock & roll tracks in the early '60s, and his funky edge is one of the reasons records by the Coasters, for instance, continue to sound good 40 years later. This compilation brings together a nice set of instrumental tracks Curtis recorded for Atlantic Records. Originally released on LP in Holland only as Do Your Thing in 1970, it functions as a sort of introduction to the funkier side of Curtis, and sides like "Memphis Soul Stew," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," and "Hold on I'm Coming" are as close to the southern Stax Records soul sound as Curtis ever got. While this isn't quite the wild, hard-blowing and honking Curtis that most people will recall from his Enjoy sessions, that's a relative assessment, since he still packs quite a punch here. His death by stabbing in 1971, one year after this collection was originally released, was an immeasurable loss. ~ Steve Leggett
