This 1973 release was the Incredible String Band's final album before disbanding. There was some final flux in personnel, but mainstays and founding members Mike Heron and Robin Williamson remained constant. This album largely showcases Heron, who also produced it. His "Ithkos" clocks in at nearly 20 minutes in length, traveling across time to various musical locales connected by a common spiritual and mythological thread. Williamson's "Dreams Of No Return" is a simple slice of beauty on par with his classic "First Girl I Loved." Orchestrated strings are employed on about half the album, giving a regal bearing to each track. HARD ROPE & SILKEN TWINE is a fitting end to a fine and unique ensemble.
