Living Blues - Sept.-Oct./92, p.73
"..Of the several sessions Sykes had with Delmark, only HARD DRIVING BLUES surpasses GOLD MINE...If you just want plain old Roosevelt Sykes alone at his piano, it's safe to start here.."
GOLD MINE: LIVE IN EUROPE was originally titled IN EUROPE and released in 1966.
Personnel: Roosevelt Sykes (vocals, piano); Robert Lockwood, Jr. (guitar); Oett "Sax" Mallard (clarinet, tenor saxophone); King Kolax (trumpet); Fred Below (drums).
Liner Note Author: Robert G. Koester.
Photographers: Anton Mikofsky; Andre Souffrant; Jim Brinsfield.
Solid 1966 solo set, cut during one of the effervescent piano pounder's frequent overseas jaunt and originally issued on Delmark as In Europe. A winning combination of material ancient even back then ("44 Blues," the jaunty boogie "Boot That Thing") and fresh numbers. ~ Bill Dahl
