Willie Banks & The Messengers: Willie Banks; Willie Mitchell.
Personnel: Michael Watts (guitar).
Willie Banks has maintained with the Messengers an awareness of the old gospel style, despite often incorporating lyrics with a more modern tinge. On Look at the Blessings, for example, such songs as "Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes" use an image very familiar in soul music, although Banks and company don't even suggest a pop tilt. Other songs, such as "He's Bringing Love to the Nation" and "A Prayer for the Children," could fit into a broad-minded urban or black station's playlist, due to their dual inspirational themes of religious salvation and social emancipation. Banks is a strong, distinctive vocalist; this doesn't compare unfavorably to many of his past gospel releases. ~ Ron Wynn
