For the third volume in the Goldband series (all are highly recommended) the artists included are more obscure but no less potent. The lone musician heard on all three collections is Big Chenier. He has another two sides here, including his classic "Goin' to the City." Bill Parker, who made a cameo appearance on Vol. 2, is a sideman on another song with Ola Vaughn, does three with Little Miss Peggie, and one with his band backing up Nat Eckbert. The most interesting, individualistic, and wild track, "All Day, All Night," comes from Blues Boy Palmer, crying out … la Ray Charles with electric piano, horns, and flute driving him. Hop Wilson gets a pair of chances to notably display his understated Muddy Waters-type singing. What sets this collection apart from the others is the inclusion of Rockin' Sidney and Thaddeus Decoulet, musicians from Louisiana who infuse a little Cajun, Creole, and zydeco in their sound. Again, to hear the raw roots of rock & roll born of the African-American experience, the Goldband compilations are worth owning. ~ Michael G. Nastos
