A second volume of Goldband Blues follows along the same solid sending lines as the first. This collection gives you more gutbucket blues and R&B, emerging from the Mississippi Delta and heading for urban Chicago juke joints. There is a rougher edge to many of these tunes than in the previous grouping, signifying a quite rambunctious, freewheeling, devil-may-care attitude. Additional tracks are carried over from the first CD by artists like Clarence Garlow, Elton Anderson, Big Chenier, Sticks Herman, and Juke Boy Bonner, especially Bonner's classics "True Love Waiting" and "My Time to Go." You get three priceless cuts from Charles "Mad Dog" Sheffield including his evergreen "One Hour, Thirty Minutes Too Long," and Left Handed Charlie, whose gritty vocal and guitar … la Elmore James perfectly personifies the looser, animated, inherently electric overall sound of this compilation. Charlie also teams with King Charles for the jazzier "Bop Cat Stomp," plus two selections from Al Smith, who would become principal songwriter and manager of Jimmy Reed, a heavy influence on all of these bluesmen. The last song, "Darling If You Love Me," is an atypically sweet ballad done by Bill Parker and Ola Vaughn that portends a more slick, populist blues to come. ~ Michael G. Nastos
