The 2013 compilation Masterworks brings together many of innovative pianist Art Tatum's recordings from throughout his career. These recordings have been issued numerous times over the years with varying degrees of sound quality, and this collection is no different. Essentially, Masterworks sounds like it was transferred directly from vinyl, with all the hiss and pop associated with that. Of course, for recordings this old, some made well over 70 years ago, that is to be expected. None of that takes away from the undeniable brilliance of Tatum's playing, which sounds as dazzling now as it did when he first recorded these songs. By no means a definitive collection, Masterworks is still a fine budget single-disc overview of Tatum's career. ~ Matt Collar
