Opening with trumpeter Cat Anderson's vehicle, "El Gato," the Ellington band swings into its umpteenth Paris performance since its storied premiere in 1933. The band was a perennial visitor to the City of Lights, and this pristine 1958 recording captures it at its swinging best. Drummer Sam Woodyard delivers an expertly constructed solo on "Hi-Fi Fo Fum," while Ellington's small group interlude on an extended selection of favorites, including "Mood Indigo" and "I'm Beginning to See the Light," is captivating.
