"[Richard] Berkowitz, Michael Kallen, Larry Kramer and others played direct roles in shaping the social impact of HIV, conceiving and creating the primacy of 'safe sex, and undoubtedly saving millions of lives. SEX POSITIVE is a well-documented look at this history."
New York Times - 06/12/2009
"The movie jolts you with the realization that the AIDS epidemic and the public debate about such issues have retreated so far under the news radar as to be half-forgotten."
Los Angeles Times - 06/19/2009
"[I]lluminating, timelessly timely....Daryl Wein calls attention both to unjustly neglected pioneering AIDS activist Richard Berkowitz and his still widely ignored groundbreaking promotion of safe sex."
Though advocating safe sex seems like a given in the new millennium, in the gay community in the early 1980s, proclaiming the idea made people into outcasts. The Grand Jury Prize winner at L.A. Outfest, this documentary examines the life and work of Richard Berkowitz, an early champion of safe sex. After spending time as a hustler, the abrasive--but ultimately correct--Berkowitz started proclaiming the dangers of unprotected sex in the early '80s, much to the anger of the gay community.
