The pairing of trumpeter Rick Braun and saxophonist Boney James is the latest smooth jazz duo project from Warner Brothers Jazz. Individually, the two are both incredible horn players, and here they play off one another wonderfully. SHAKE IT UP is a carefully chosen title, indicative of the musical heights to which the two pushed each other during this recording.
The cuts here are mostly catchy and upbeat, as in the smooth jazz hit "Grazin' in the Grass," but tracks such as "More Than You Know" also offer gentler moments that slow things down without slowing them down too much. Braun's jazzy trumpet mixes nicely with James' funky saxophone throughout all 10 tracks, only one of which, a reprise of "Grazin' in the Grass," is a vocal. A pre-planned jam session that often succeeds in sounding spontaneous, SHAKE IT UP will delight smooth jazz buffs, whether fans of Boney James, Rick Braun, or both.
