The Christmas Episode is a long-standing tradition for many popular television shows, carrying warmhearted messages that celebrate the season. These very special episodes let beloved TV characters bring cheer and good will to their loyal audiences at home while providing some carefree relief from holiday stresses.
The Adventures of Long John Silver: "The Orphans' Christmas" - Miss Purity and Long John Silver think it's high time that the local orphans - long deprived of Christmas by their wicked caretaker - get a chance to enjoy the season's festivities. The old pirate devises a clever plot to bring holiday joy to these unfortunate children but finds he accomplishes much more.
Annie Oakley: "Santa Claus Wears A Gun" - Sharpshooter Snowy Kringle comes to Diablo to perform in a show, but a government agent claims the aging marksman is really a murderous outlaw. Although Annie thinks Snowy looks like Santa Claus, she and Lofty must jail the old man when he is suspected of robbing an Army payroll. She soon discovers that things are not what they seem.
The Adventures of Robin Hood: "The Christmas Goose" - Young Davey adores his pet goose, Matilda, but she's about to be cooked and eaten at the Lord of the Manor's holiday table. Robin Hood and Friar Tuck plot a "miracle" to save the bird and rescue the little boy's Christmas.
The Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel: "The Christmas Present" - Sir Percy Blakeney risks his life to save four aristocratic children who are under house arrest in France, victims of the dreaded Reign of Terror. The swashbuckler depends on a poor family's kindness in his efforts to whisk his young wards safely to England in time for Christmas.
Four classic Christmas tales are featured on this collection; each tale was originally produced for television in the early days of the medium. The collection begins with "The Adventures of Long John Silver: The Orphans' Christmas," in which Miss Purity and Long John Silver demonstrate their kindness by helping a group of orphans
enjoy the holiday season. "Annie Oakley: Santa Claus Wears A Gun" follows, telling the story of a Santa Claus lookalike who is accused of armed robbery. Next up, "The Adventures of Robin Hood: The Christmas Goose" sees Robin and his merry bunch of men trying to save a cute little goose from ending up on the Christmas dinner table. Then, completing the collection, "The Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel: The Christmas Present" tells the story of four children trapped in a house in France, who are desperate to make it back to their native England for the holiday season.

If, for no other reason, buy this DVD for the inclusion of the episode from the extremely hard-to-find adventure series "The Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel." Costume adventure series like this, Robin Hood, and Long John Silver were a staple of mid to late 1950s television and, for the most part, haven't been seen since syndication runs ended in the early 1960s. Thank goodness that at least some of the episodes have been preserved on DVD. The audio/visual quality of these 50 year old episodes is generally good to very good and collectors of these series will not be disappointed. The inclusion of the "Annie Oakley" episode is a little out of place, given the swashbuckler/costume adventure theme of the other series but, on the whole, it's a very entertaining collection.
