Product Description:

Personnel: Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (tenor saxophone); Clark Terry, Richard Williams, Bob Bryant (trumpet); Melba Liston, Jimmy Cleveland (trombone); Jerome Richardson, Oliver Nelson, Eric Dolphy, George Barrow, Bob Ashton (reeds); Richard Wyands (piano); Wendell Marshall (bass); Roy Haynes (drums).
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on September 20, 1960. Originally released on Prestige (7206). Includes original liner notes by Joe Goldberg.
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This 1960 set, led by the tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, swings between the high-octane big band sounds of the title track and "Whole Nelson," romantic, lyrical ballads such as "You Are Too Beautiful," and the cool modern jazz of "The Stolen Moment." Davis displays his versatility with solos that encompass barrelhouse blues, bebop, and smooth sophistication--sometimes in the space of one tune, as on the bluesy "Walk Away."
