Under the thumb of corrupt promoters, aspiring boxer Frank "Knockout" Morgan (John Darrow) has become their fall guy in the boxing ring. His love for hometown girl Mary Wilson brings the hopeful champion's fight fixing days to an end when Frank resolves to defy his crooked handlers.
Fighting to win against the reigning champ during his biggest bout yet, Frank brings the entire town to the edge of their seats. The person with the most riding on the outcome is Mary's spunky little brother Arthur Wilson (Mickey Rooney). Disheartened at learning the truth about his hero, the boy must see Frank playing fair to believe in him again.
Two very popular film series highlight Mickey Rooney's childhood career: Mickey McGuire's Gang (1927-1933) and Andy Hardy (1940s). He starred in several important movies during the 1930s, including A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), A Family Affair (1937), Boys Town (1939) and Babes in Arms (1939). The talented actor is also fondly remembered for his role in National Velvet (1944) opposite a young Elizabeth Taylor.
THE BIG CHANCE portrays a novice fighter faced with tough challenges as he prepares to compete against the reigning champ. Pip squeak Mickey Rooney stars as a young boxing fan.
