"...this quartet and its music offer a coolly contemplative approach to improvisational frameworks. It carries the spacious ambiance, timbral range and emotional reserve that have long been associated with Manfred Eicher's ECM label..."

Bob Brookmeyer New Quartet: Bob Brookmeyer (valve trombone); Kris Goessens (piano); Riccardo Del Fra (bass); Dre Pallemaerts (drums).
Recorded at Studio 44, Monster, The Netherlands on October 15-17, 1993 and January 5, 1994. Includes liner notes by Bob Brookmeyer and Francois Lacharme.
All songs written by Bob Brookmeyer or Kris Goessens except "Chaconne" (Henning Berg).
Veteran valve-trombonist/composer Bob Brookmeyer has not recorded many small group dates during the 1980s and '90s, making this Challenge CD with a young European rhythm section (pianist Kris Goessens, bassist Riccardo Del Fra and drummer Dre Pallemaerts) a bit special. Brookmeyer plays eight obscurities (four by him and three by his pianist) that are complex, harmonically advanced and yet still able to be swung. Well worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow
