Art Blakey: Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Bobby Timmons (piano); Jymie Merritt (electric bass); Art Blakey (drums).
Recorded for a radio broadcast, this live set from Switzerland in 1960 is an excellent picture of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in their classic lineup. Featuring a very young Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter long before his tenure with Miles Davis, the soulful Bobby Timmons, and longtime bassist Jymie Merritt, this edition of the Messengers is considered by many to be the most talented and certainly the most prolific.
Here the group performs a sizzling set of favorites including Shorter's signature "Lester Left Town," Timmons' classic "Dat Dere," and Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time." In the middle of it all Blakey boldly makes careful introduction of the members of his group, praising each performer like a proud father. For fans of this edition of the Messengers, this is a gem that is sure to hold a treasured spot in any collection.
