One of the most successful and haunting documentary series of all time, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's PARADISE LOST trilogy, began with a horrific act of brutality: in 1993, three eight-year-old boys turned up mutilated in a forest in West Memphis, Arkansas. Three local teens - Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. - were singled out and accused of the crime, predominantly for their goth lifestyles and love of heavy metal music; many in the community accused these social outcasts of slaying the children in a Satanic ritual. Though the evidence against the "West Memphis Three" was largely circumstantial, prosecutors succeeded at obtaining execution for Echols and life sentences for the other two. Berlinger and Sinofsky picked up the story in the 1996 PARADISE LOST: THE CHILD MURDERS AT ROBIN HOOD HILLS, which took a defensive view of the indicted and passionately argued for their innocence. The filmmakers then made two sequels: the 2000 PARADISE LOST 2: REVELATIONS - which explores the disturbing role that one of the victims' fathers may have played in the case; and the 2011 PARADISE LOST 3: PURGATORY, which follows the prisoners' successful attempts to have the case reopened on the basis of DNA evidence. All three films appear in this box set.
