In this poignant TV drama, Michael Learned portrays Zoe Jensen, a divorced woman who moves to a new city in an attempt to rebuild her life. She begins by joining the local church choir directed by a stern but gifted choirmaster (John Houseman). Zoe clashes with the unsparing man, but soon finds friendship within the group, and discovers she is not the only one with difficulties to overcome.

A newly divorced and jobless woman in a strange city far from home joins a church choir and under the direction of a stern but gifted choir master, she becomes part of a group striving toward a common goal: to shape a ragtag assembly of amateurs into a chorus capable of performing Handel's "Messiah" for the Christmas service.
