Description by OLDIES.com:
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. is Bill O'Brien, a would-be gangster who teams up with Nina Barona (Rita Hayworth), an out-of-luck dancer, in a swindle scheme that get them more than they bargained for.
Ben Hecht wrote, produced and directed this fascinating character study of the desolate world of losers and two-bit hustlers living in the gritty underworld of New York City. Playing an unsuccessful show girl, Hayworth is absolutely stunning in this solemn mixture of fantasy and reality. Both Hecht and Fairbanks were unfamiliar with Hayworth when she was cast, never imagining that she would become a superstar. They were impressed with the results, as were the critics. "Rita Hayworth is outstanding in the most exacting role she has (played)" [The Hollywood Reporter].
As down-and-out characters struggling to rise above their limitations, Hayworth and Fairbanks deliver unrestrained and overpowering performances, making Angels Over Broadway a highly compelling drama.
Director Ben Hecht brings to life the world of loners, two-bit hustlers and has-beens that populate Times Square. Bill O' Brien (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.) plans to swindle a suicidal thief, but then plots with call girl Nina Barone (Rita Hayworth) to turn his life around. A great cast headlines an unusually black comedy for its time. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Screenplay.
Four Broadway types come together in various adventures that illustrate life in Times Square in 1940. One is a playwright who saves another character, an embezzler, from suicide. A third is a hustler type who thinks he can pull one over on the embezzler. Completing the group is the girl who gets in on the hustle before it is all worked out.
