Free-jazz aficionados have reason to celebrate with the 2007 CD issue of THE HILVERSUM SESSION by the Albert Ayler Quartet. Recorded in 1964 in a radio station before a small audience, the session was not issued until 1980 on LP (a CD did appear later, though briefly), but the 2007 edition boasts superior sound, notes, and packaging.
Ayler's quartet consists of stellar musicians-- drummer Sunny Murray, bassist Gary Peacock, and trumpeter Don Cherry--all of whom were playing at their peak. The set, featuring Ayler originals (save one composition by Cherry), is bracing free jazz that teems with sharp interplay, lyricism, and mercurial energy. This is a hidden gem, and comes highly recommended to any fans of the genre.
