A headstrong writer reluctantly teams up with a fur trapper to survive in the wilderness of Alaska. Facing vicious attacks by packs of wild dogs and a dwindling food supply, the inhabitants of the local Eskimo settlement choose exodus over death. Jean Williams, a visiting novelist in search of inspiration, chooses to stay behind with her menagerie of animals, despite the sensible warnings of fur trader and suitor Hugo Henderson. Trapper Gaston Rogers finds himself stranded as well, and convinces her that their best chance of survival is to move on. With her animals in tow, the mismatched pair travel through the bleak Alaskan landscape enroute to Nenana, where Jean hopes to witness the annual ice break. After losing their sled and team of dogs in the ice flow, Jean and Gaston are rescued with Hugo's help and brought back to civilization where a strange love triangle begins.
A female novelist who heads to the Yukon in search of material for a novel finds plenty of fertile territory in the forms of a near-mythical half-wolf/half-dog that terrorizes the locals and dangerous, breaking ice.
