David Hockney has become internationally known and respected for his brightly colored scenes of California landscapes and domestic scenes. On Hockney's 50th birthday the Tate Gallery in London featured a retrospective of his work. Hockney discusses the stages of his career with host Melvyn Bragg as he tours the exhibit.

Since he burst onto the art scene in the mid-Sixties, David Hockney has become one of the most popular and successful British painters of the Twentieth century. His reputation has been made both by the appeal of his work and his passion for and skill in talking about painting. To mark his fiftieth birthday in 1988, London's Tate Gallery staged a major retrospective of his work.
