Neal McCoy may be a country artist, but he understands the evocative power of an old pop song--a subject that comes up over and over again on his eighth album, LIFE OF THE PARTY. In the bouncy "New Old Songs," he namechecks everyone from Buddy Holly to Bill Haley, and describes how a new version of an old tune can still pack an emotional punch in "Lipstick on the Radio." Even the title track is a country twist on "Tracks of My Tears"--as in the Miracles' hit, the narrator is considered "the life of the party," but inside, he's dying over his lost love. "Completely" is a ballad that wouldn't have sounded out of place on the radio in 1956. The closing track is a surprising version of the Nat King Cole standard "Straighten Up and Fly Right," which McCoy turns into a delightful Western swing tune. But LIFE OF THE PARTY isn't completely obsessed with the past--it includes plenty of modern, well-crafted tracks, like the terrific opening cut "I Was." Overall, LIFE OF THE PARTY does a fine job of showing off the charm, energy and versatility that helped win McCoy the 1998 TNN Music City News Entertainer of the Year Award.
