As advertised, this album contains many of Kris Kristofferson's "super hits, " though it's worth noting that, with the exception of the gold, chart-topping "Why Me," none of them were super hits for Kristofferson: "Me and Bobby McGee" was a country hit for Roger Miller, then a pop hit for Janis Joplin; "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" was a country hit for Ray Stevens and for Johnny Cash; "For the Good Times" topped the country charts for Ray Price; Sammi Smith did the same with "Help Me Make It Through the Night"; and both Roger Miller and Tompall & the Glaser Brothers had country hits with "Lovin' Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)." The versions here are Kristofferson's, with "Me and Bobby McGee," "The Pilgrim: Chapter 33," and "Casey's Last Ride" (the last two among the several songs that weren't actually hits, but are among the songwriter's best material) in live renditions. Given its budget price, this ten-track compilation may be the best place for a neophyte to get a sense of the songwriting prowess of a man no doubt better known as a movie actor (in part because all of these songs date from the late '60s and early '70s). ~ William Ruhlmann
