Steve Reeves is Hadji Murad, the legendary 19th century Avar/Chechen warrior chieftain who battles his peoples' Tsarist oppressors in this sweeping spectacle loaded with swashbuckling violence, forbidden desire and betrayal.
Filmed in Technicolor by acclaimed genre director Mario Bava and brimming with first-rate action sequences, this tale is a frank and even-handed depiction of the effects of the atrocities of war on the peasant class.
The source for The White Warrior was Leo Tolstoy's novel Hadji Murad, which was based upon Tolstoy's personal experiences in the Russian army, when he was sent to the Caucasus to help defeat Murad and his rebel forces. The White Warrior is an epic retelling of one of the greatest stories ever written.
Steeve Reeves stars as Hadji Murad the White Warrior in this story of a man who lead a small group of followers to victory over the evil Czar Nicholas I and his army. Nicknamed by the natives, the strong and domineering Hadji came to the rescue of a village oppressed by poverty and evil under the awful rule of the infamous Czar.

Romantic wartime swashbuckler based on actual historical figures
Movie Lover: the Jax from California -- September, 5, 2004
Odd that I'm writing this just as Chechnyan rebels are making headlines as bloodthirsty terrorists.
While the real story might not have a happy ending, Steve Reeves is a heroic Hadji Murad.
The role of the 1800s Muslim rebel is a departure for muscleman Reeves, remembered for his many Hercules-type films.
Good acting, fierce battles, lavish sets, and mostly great costumes help realize a story that's action-packed as well as emotion-stirring.
From a Tsar's rage to a chieftain's treachery, to a princess torn between duty and compassion, you won't easily forget the story of Hadji Murad's struggle.
