Bobby Womack's S.O.U.L. amounts to a sampler of his late-'70s albums Home Is Where the Heart Is, Pieces, and Roads of Life. It features the charting singles "Home Is Where the Heart Is," "Trust Your Heart," "How Could You Break My Heart," and the "heart"-less "Standing in the Safety Zone," along with six deeper cuts. The number one disco single "I Feel a Groove Coming On" is conspicuously absent. During this era, Womack wasn't exactly at his peak. That said, there is some outstanding material here; lovers of Womack's earlier work, as well as late-'70s R&B rooted deeply in gritty soul, should have no trouble enjoying this straightforward, if imperfect, budget release. ~ Andy Kellman
