Gospel Favorites collects 20 gospel recordings Roy Acuff recorded for Hickory Records in the 1960s, originally heard on albums such as Hand-Clapping Gospel Songs. Although Acuff recorded some of these songs, including "The Great Speckled Bird" and "Little Moses," several times in the course of his long career, his Hickory versions feature robust performances with old-time instrumentation. Collectors will enjoy spotting the variances in tempos and arrangements from his earlier renditions, while casual listeners who find 1930s and '40s recordings rough going may appreciate the more modern production quality. Acuff was a stalwart of the Grand Ole Opry and a man who literally oozed sincerity as he openly wept on-stage, so his gospel sides are old-fashioned and full of fervor, joy, and sorrow -- mountain music and old-time religion in one. ~ Greg Adams
