Real life mother and son Patty Duke and Mackenzie Astin co-star in this gentle drama. Astin plays William Dane, an unemployed hospice worker who must simultaneously find employment and care for his emotionally fragile mom (Duke). He ultimately stumbles into a job working for Tander Welch, a writer suffering from terminal illness who wants to reconnect with his three daughters and then undergo euthanasia. Tander instructs William to convey the news of his death to each of the estranged women; in so doing, he gets to know the ailing man through the daughters' eyes, and grows convinced that if only one of the girls can forgive her father for the emotional pain he has caused, Tander may regain the motivation to live.
