As NASA prepares for the first Challenger space shuttle mission of 1983, the media breaks out in a frenzy when it's confirmed that a woman may be part of the five-member crew. Competing for the honor are three doctors, each a specialist in her field: Susan Browning (Anne Archer), an internist; Joanna Douglas (Sharon Gless), a professor of mathematics; and Maureen Harris (Dee Wallace), a botanist/physicist. While all three women endure the rigors of NASA training, they also must deal with personal issues, problems that could keep them grounded instead of making history as America's first woman in space.
