Fearful that the new "talkie" pictures are going to send stage shows the way of the dinosaurs, stage director Chester Kent (James Cagney) and his right-hand girl, Nan Prescott (Joan Blondell) hatch an idea that could save their skins. With backing from unscrupulous producers Si Gould (Guy Kibbee) and Al Frazer (Arthur Hohl), Chester and Nan want to stage live movie prologues for theater houses. Complications arise when a disgruntled former employee begins stealing their ideas and selling them to Chester's rival, the Gladstone Company.
