"...Francis has created a distinctive style for the film..."Based on Dylan Thomas' original screen play, this shocking horror-thriller stars Timothy Dalton as Thomas Rock, a brilliant young anatomy professor in 1820s Edinburgh. At first accepting only the cadavers provided him for study -- those of a few hanged criminals a year -- Rock eventually recruits two grave robbers (Jonathan Pryce and Stephen Rea) to secure a better supply of corpses. Coming to the gory conclusion that they will earn more for "fresher" corpses, the two begin committing murder and delivering warm bodies to the doctor's lecture chambers. Also starring Julian Sands and Twiggy, The Doctor And The Devils brings classic chills from start to finish.
Set in 19th century Victorian England, this thoughtful Dickensian thriller is based on a screenplay by Dylan Thomas. Timothy Dalton (THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS) stars as Dr. Thomas Rock, an anatomy professor and physician whose noble intentions of bettering society are eclipsed by his professional need for fresh corpses. The doctor hires a pair of thugs to rob graves to supply him with fresh cadavers for his research, but the consistently maggot-ridden, decomposed nature of their deliveries prompts him to offer higher prices for fresher corpses. Looking the other way when his employees deliver still-warm bodies, the doctor begins to pay them to murder people--all in the name of medical research. Julian Sands (HOTEL) co-stars as Dr. Rock's stoic assistant, while former model Twiggy plays Jennie, a spunky bar-room wench.
In 18th Century London, where there is a limit put on how many human cadavers a teaching physician can use in class, a medical doctor resorts to paying two grave robbers to provide him with fresh corpses, not asking any questions as to how they are acquired. What he finds out, as do the authorities, is that the shiftless and wandering tramps are doing the killing themselves and selling the bodies to the good doctor.
