Alan Ladd delivers one of his earliest credited performances in this gripping tale of personal tragedy and political corruption. Years of hard-knock suffering for Rita Adams (Joan Woodbury) are capped off by her selflessly taking the rap for her boyfriend's drunk-driving, hit-and-run charge. After being released from prison, the scorned Rita turns to a life of crime, starting with numerous petty holdups and graduating to the head of a ruthless syndicate that's run by crooked city officials. Alan Ladd plays Jimmy Kelly, who has infiltrated the government-controlled rackets by pretending to be a notorious gangster.
A young innocent girl goes to jail to shield her boyfriend. She vows revenge against the boyfriend's wealthy father and eventually goes on to become queen of a vast syndicate of mobsters.

Tough, taunt and terrific!!!!
I only watched this DVD last night after having bought it through a local supplier and i AM IMPRESSED!
Great casting, good script and fine acting! Only negative i could say about this DVD is, that the actual PRINT quality of the film in question is NOT fantastic.........(However considering this film was made in 1941, allowances for the actual age of the print must be taken into consideration.)
I enjoyed the story and was refreshed to find that it just wasn't another you beaut, they live happily ever after scenario.......The storyline was real and dramatic and the actors didn't look or sound picture book perfect....they seemed real to me and had real problems.....(not oh dear, do shake another martini whilst i squizz over the financial times....aka blakk, belch, blahh!!!!)
Sad ending..........nobody goes home happy ever after at the end of this movie......real people gettng hurt, dying....getting locked up.....
I would recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys the realistic drama/crime drama genre......IF your looking for fluffy escapism..........then forget it........this picture is NOT for you.
