Depending on who you ask, the Sons of the Pioneers' RCA-Victor recordings (1944-1952) constitute either the group's best or second-best work. They enjoyed their greatest chart success during this time, but many rightly feel that these re-recorded versions of their early classics are inferior to the originals. Nonetheless, "Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima," "No One to Cry To," "Teardrops in My Heart," and the title track were some of the group's biggest hits, and they're all here, although the omission of certain hits of this era (most notably "Baby Doll" and "My Best to You") makes this a somewhat scattershot collection. Still, it's about as good a sampler of the Pioneers' Victor recordings as one can currently find. ~ Jim Smith
