Astronauts on a secret mission to Mars discover that an unstoppable renegade space station is speeding toward a defenseless Earth on a deadly collision course. The scientists are faced with a horrific choice - watch helplessly as their planet is destroyed or risk their lives on a million-to-one chance to stop the impact. When every option seems exhausted, a heroic reporter makes a final attempt to save the Earth. Filmed in 1961, Assignment: Outer Space is a showcase for the groundbreaking special effects work of Caesar Peace and is one in a series of colorful space-adventure films directed by Antonio Magheriti.

Assignment:Outer Space
Movie Lover: jim karr from the keetseel -- January, 6, 2005
I give this one an extra star for effort. I saw this when I was a kid in the theater and for years afterward looked for it. With the advent of tape/DVD, I located it. In order to appreciate this film you have to remember a time way back before great special effects- when movies had to rely on story- not millions of dollars of effects. It is forgotten campy movies like this that inspire the young people of yesterday to become the Spielbergs and the Lucas'.
Unexpedly good movie
Movie Lover: James Kirk from USA -- December, 6, 2004
I watched this movie expecting it to be bad. Was I surprised to find a good theme in this wonderful film. It begins with a reporter going on board to interview the crew of a space station. The commander has little tolerance for him until his first officer ( a young lady ) falls for him. The reporter takes a risk and puts his life on the line to save the crew. The commander then ignores orders from central command not to save him. He realizes that we can explore space forever but if we don't "value one another we are all lost" and "no better than the machines" that take us into space" ..It's a message that is still true today...
