J. Carrol Naish stars as the insane Doctor Igor Markoff, who injects famous concert pianist Lawrence (Ralph Morgan) with a serum that produces a disfiguring disease, grotesquely distorting bones and facial features. By promising him an antidote, Markoff blackmails Lawrence for the hand in marriage of his beautiful daughter (Wanda McKay). Naish and Morgan give flawless performances in this audacious and often grim PRC production. Also on hand is an enraged laboratory gorilla and Glenn Strange as Markoff's henchman.
When a mad scientist asks a pianist for his daughter's hand he is refused so he turns the pianist into a monster. He'll change him back--if he gets the daughter.

THE MONSTER MAKER
Movie Lover: henri donadille from clamart, Hauts-de-Seine FR -- October, 23, 2004
Good horror film with an unusual story (borrows a bit from 1934's "The Black Cat") and a great cast. Doesn't have the look and the feel of a PRC film. Actually, seems more like a higher budgeted Republic feature. Alpha's D.V.D. is struck from a very acceptable print.
Good B movie + excellent film to disc transfer = fun
Movie Lover: kinovend from Grand Rapids, MI US -- November, 5, 2003
Leonard Maltin calls this PRC effort "particularly distasteful" and I don't entirely disagree. Mad doctor Naish lusts after classic pianist Morgan's lovely daughter McKay. The coldly suave and urbane Naish injects Morgan with a serum to induce the hideous deforming disease in a plot to make McKay his unwilling bride. A truly horrorific idea, well played by the cast. I should also mention Ms. Tala Birell as Naish's lab assistant who learns the truth about her boss. Her love for him is replaced with loathing, and Naish tries to kill her. All in all, a scary movie. Picture and sound are several notches above other PRC movies from alpha. Very nice.
