Description by

American movie icon James Stewart portrays one of J. Edgar Hoover's finest and Vera Miles co-stars as his steadfast wife in this salute to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The colorful career of Agent Chip Hardesty (Stewart) covers 1924 to the late '50s. Along the way he tangles with everything from the Ku Klux Klan to a bomber who commits mass murder for insurance money. His fiercest exploits come in the '30s when he stares down a gun barrel at Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, Machine Gun Kelly, Ma Barker and John Dillinger. From two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Don Whitehead's bestseller and directed by veteran Hollywood hitmaker Mervyn LeRoy, The FBI Story is your rat-a-tat ticket to the inside story.

Product Description:

Jimmy Stewart plays the great American yet again as Chip Hardesty, a backwoods paper pusher for the Bureau of Investigation, the predecessor to the FBI. Under pressure from his wife, Lucy (Vera Miles), Hardesty decides to resign in order to pursue a more lucrative career as a lawyer. But when he travels to D.C., Hardesty meets the bureau's new boss, J. Edgar Hoover, and decides to stick with the organization. Over the next 30 years, Hardesty travels the country to face all the evils and villains of the United States, including the Ku Klux Klan, murderous oil barons, John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Nazis, and communist spies. Throughout, Hardesty struggles between his commitment to his growing family and the life-threatening demands of his job. Choosing the street operator's perspective on the history of the FBI provides the film with numerous action sequences that are accompanied by a fine score from maestro Max Steiner.

Plot Synopsis:

THE FBI STORY follows the career of a straight-arrow FBI agent from the Prohibition-era founding of the bureau to the cold war as he struggles between loyalty to his family and dedication to his career.

Production Notes:

  • Made with the full support of the FBI, the historical value of THE FBI STORY is somewhat tenuous.
  • The bureau allowed the filmmakers to go behind the scenes and into the labs and document files of its Washington, D.C., headquarters.
