Get This Party Started! features renditions of hit pop and rock singles by the Countdown Kids. Though the Kids can actually sing and there's nothing explicitly mature in the lyrics of songs like "Get This Party Started," hearing young children sing about their Mercedes Benzes and diamond rings just doesn't sound right -- it's the aural equivalent of seeing a little girl wearing a full face of makeup. Likewise, technically sound versions of "I Wanna Be With You" and "Everywhere" don't quite work because of the songs' rather heavy and advanced subject matter. Flat versions of songs like "All Star" and "I'm a Believer" also reveal that while the Countdown Kids are good singers for their ages, their pipes aren't quite developed enough for brassy songs like those. Actually, the Kids' versions of dippy dance-pop numbers like "We Like to Party" and "Beautiful Life" are the album's most successful songs, precisely because they're so cheerful and lightweight. Ultimately, the whole concept of kids singing contemporary pop songs seems a bit wrongheaded, but Get This Party Started! mixes youthful innocence and pop hipness as well as it probably can be combined. ~ Heather Phares
